STRIKE THREAT TO FRENCH SKI RESORTS

Ski areas in France could be closed or have their operations disrupted by strike action planned to coincide with the busy February holidays.

The CGT union says planned changes to the unemployment system will short change the seasonal workers that the ski industry relies upon.

It’s thought that lift operators and resort staff are among those who will withdraw their labour.

The one-day strike is planned for Saturday 15th February.

French media report that the date is in the middle of the half-term school holidays for some regions in France and the start of the holidays for others.

It is also the start of the British half-term, though most families are likely to be travelling to the Alps on strike day or the day after.

The union says the action will be co-ordinated in French ski resorts in the Isère, Savoie and Haute-Savoie départements.

“Strike notices are going to be filed in all the resorts to take co-ordinated action with blockades in some places.

“We absolutely must inform tourists who are not at all aware of what is happening,” Antoine Fatiga, secretary general of CGT Transports, told France Info TV.

The strike is not related to the ongoing French transport strikes that have disrupted travel for thousands of skiers and snowboarders so far this season.
