Snow in the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Rockies & Beyond…

The cold snap across much of Europe has brought some dustings of snow.  It may only be the start of September, but it’s a sign that winter is on its way. UPDATED

THE ALPS

Some of the Swiss resorts have undergone a transformation.

Verbier has gone from summer to autumn overnight.

Glacier 3000 near Gstaad and Les Diablerets claims 40cm of fresh snow.

Over in France here’s Val Thorens in Les3Vallees:

A few days ago it was a summer scene in the highest resort in the Alps.

Val Thorens is planning to open at the end of November.

With all things being OK on the Covid-19 front PlanetSKI, once again, plans to be there for its opening weekend as the winter of 2020/21 gets underway in late November.

We’ve been going for many years:

We start our season in Val Thorens

Nearby Val d’Isere reports snow falling at 2,500m and above with 5cm at 2,600m.

Here’s the wintry scene at the Col de l’ Iseran.

While it’s also looking pretty wintry at the top of the Olympique too.

The weather though has closed some of the lifts and limited summer activities.

“The Borsat chairlift will remain closed for the day,” said Radio Val d’Isere at the weekend.

“The Tc de Solaise and the Olympique cable car will be open but only for pedestrians. No access by ski lifts for mountain bikes on the area today because of the weather.”

Skiing is currently in offer in Cervinia in the Aosta Valley Italy on the glacier it shares with Zermatt.

There has been a dusting at altitude and (continuing with the cow theme in our photographs) here is what it looked like ahead of the storm.

Down in Aosta itself one of our regular readers, Phil Brown from Impulse Racing, says “as the sun comes back out after a couple of days….. the first early Snow’s arrived up high”.

Here is the scene in Alpe d’Huez in the southern French Alps.

THE PYRENEES

There has been some snow over in the Pyrenees too.

In Andorra the snow level is at 2,200m and more snow is forecast this afternoon and into Sunday night.

The snow in the Alps of course means absolutely nothings for the winter and it will all melt, but we’re snow lovers.

We love to see snow.

The snow has arrived in the Alps, Pyreness and beyond with a dusting in some resort in North America too.

THE ROCKIES, NORTH AMERICA

Here’s Big Sky in Montana, USA:

And in neighbouring Wyoming:

The first snow has been seen at altitude in Colorado, USA.

The resorts of Arapahoe Basin and Loveland battle it out to open first, usually mid-November.

Loveland has already seen a dusting.

Here’s a web camera image from the top of Lift 9 at 3,800m.

Loveland says it hopes to start making snow in around four weeks.

Aspen has seen the lightest of dustings – 2.5cm according to the resort.

And further north in Canada the first falls of snow have been seen too:

AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND

Where snow has been falling in ski resorts in decent amounts is Down Under.

Coronet Peak in New Zealand has received 20cm in the latest ongoing storm.

Australia has seen some decent snowfall too, with around 1m falling recently.
