Snow Falls Around the World

Winter is ending in the southern hemisphere and approaching in the north. It is one of those rare times when there is snow falling in ski areas across much of the world.

We have reported on the huge autumn snowstorm that hit the Alps last weekend.

With up to 1m falling in places, plus the fact it hit France, Switzerland, Austria and to a lesser extent Italy.

We can’t recall a bigger September snow storm in recent years.

Ski resorts open as massive autumn snowstorm passes

There has even been a spot of skiing and snowboarding for the favoured few.

Feast your eyes on some powder skiing in the video below with September turns in La Plagne.

Some short video clips from the Tirol posted on Inmstagram by Arianna Tricomi.

The Pyrenees also saw some decent falls.

From Baqueira Beret, watch the video clips below as Adrià Millan Pla skis on fresh powder.

But what about elsewhere around the world?

Australia has seen up to half a meter as it enters the final throws of the season.

Perisher reports 40cm and is scheduled to close this weekend, October 5th.

There has also been snow in Falls Creek.

The only trouble is the resort is shut and the lifts are not running.

But that hasn’t stopped those with a bit of determination.

Mt Buller in Victoria has reopened after the fresh snow and easing of Covid-19 restrictions.

There have been huge falls in New Zealand too.

The Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, was trapped in Invercargill after flights were cancelled due to the snow.

She was travelling to Dunedin to try to get a flight to Auckland as planes  were grounded.

Flights have now resumed at Queenstown Airport and Invercargill Airport.

The storm hs been described as the “worst of the season,” by  the New Zealand Met service.

To us skiers and snowboarders that means “best of the season” – once it passes.

In Cardrona  40cm of fresh snow has fallen.

“It’s absolutely brilliant. We couldn’t think of anything better,” said a statement from the resort.

The only trouble is there is so much snow, accompanied by high winds, that Cardrona remains closed.

The weather is forecast to improve from Wednesday and there should be some great spring skiing.

The Remarkables ski area is also closed due to the large snow dump and high winds.

The Remarkables has seen 50cm of new snow.

“50cm plus of the last 72 hours and it hasn’t stopped yet,” said the resort.

“Here’s the back door to the base lodge, imagine what its like up in your favourite stash today”.

The Tūroa and Whakapapa ski areas in the North Island were closed on Monday due to gale force winds, heavy rain and storm damage to the snow pack.

Over in North America there has been some early falls in Alberta in Canada.

In the USA it has been cold enough to turn on the snow guns at Arapahoe Basin as it aims to open next month.

It is set for its annual battle with Loveland to see which resorts can open first.

Loveland saw some early September snow, but much has now melted.

Elsewhere there has been a dusting at altitude.

While a few people have been out for some early turns in September.

And what about further afield?

Japan perhaps.

The resort of Niseko has seen its first dustings too.

Back in Europe it is looking tasty in Scandinavia.

Levi in Finland is set to open this week.

“Just a few more days left to wait! On Friday 2.10. at 9.30 PM Levi opens for the new ski season,” said the resort.

Ruka in Finland is also planning to open on Friday.

With a bit of help from snow stored from last season.

And over in South America where a few resorts have been open?

We’re just checking and will be updating this article shortly.
