Snow in the Mountains…

There’s some of the best autumn snow that we can recall. It’s been falling again with more resorts in the Alps open and others preparing to, cross-country skiing is underway with preparations for skiing in North America starting up. Check out the rolling PlanetSKI snow report… UPDATED

There wasn’t a huge amount last weekend in the Alps compared to the past couple of weeks, but some resorts in the Alps saw more than 20cm.

Resorts in Austria did well – Kaprun, Obertauern, Hintertux and Nassfeld.

The Dolomites in Italy saw moderate snowfall on Sunday, but the French, Swiss, western Italian and far western Austrian Alps received only see a few scattered showers or flurries.

There was widespread snow in the Pyrenees.

Here’s the resort of Piau-Engaly on the French side of the range.

We have further videos from Andorra towards the end of this article.

Now we have more snow in the Alps.

It has allowed cross-country skiing to start in Pitztal in the Tirol.

“Since today you can also do classic cross-country skiing on the Pitztal glacier” said the resort.

A total of 6 kilometres of cross-country ski run (classic and skating) at 2,700m are now available.

Here’s what it looks like at the top in Pitztal:

It has been fabulous for the Austrian glacier resorts that are open this month.

PlanetSKI reader, Holger Gassler, has been out on the slopes of Stubai in the Tirol in Austria this weekend and posted this image for us:

Engleberg in Switzerland is the latest to open some slopes for skiing and snowboarding.

It joins its fellow Swiss resorts of Zermatt and Saas-Fee that had always planned to be open.

In Zermatt people were out this week, with face masks the norm as they headed up.

The image was taken by PlanetSKI reader, Tim Whiteman, who was in the resort.

Glacier 3000 near Gstaad and Les Diablerets in Switzerland opened a slope a couple of weeks ago after the first huge snowstorm of the autumn.

We reported on it at the time:

Ski resorts open as massive snowstorm hits the Alps

And then on the storm that struck last weekend:

Snow in the Alps, Pyrenees and beyond

In France Tignes and Les2Alpes are due to open  this coming weekend on Saturday October 17th.

It’s looking good.

Here at PlanetSKI we are updating this article with more images and videos of the snow.

Here’s Pas de la Casa in Andorra in the Pyrenees:

And it’s looking good across the Principality in the resorts of Pal/Arisnal.

And lets not forget Canada too.

There’s been some snow in Sunshine Village in Banff in Alberta, Canada.

The resort opens next month.

Sadly most of us can’t actually get to the mountains to ski or snowboard due to Covid-19 quarantine and travel restrictions, but the images are still great to see.
